Sip your wine from above the clouds! The tasting room
portal at Balagna Winery overlooks an 800 ft. gorge of the Rio Grande
and offers spectacular scenery. Winemaking is a second career for
John Balagna, who spent 42 years as a nuclear chemist at the Los
Alamos National Laboratory. The winery is a labor of love sculpted
into the side of the mountain. Sculpture abounds on the winery grounds
where John's wife displays her white marble statues.
Wines produced are all from New Mexico grapes. They
include Chardonnay, Riesling, Zinfandel, and blends such as Celeste
Blaco, Dago Red and Italian varietals. A best seller, La Bomba Grande
wine, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first nuclear bomb
test.
The winery is open six days a week for tours, tasting,
and sales from noon to 6 pm. We are closed on Mondays.
